Benefits of Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt is a pure, hand-mined salt that contains 84 minerals and trace elements.

Khewra Salt Mines, Pakistan

Himalayan mountain range

Himalayan crystal salt comes from the pristine Khewra mines in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan, where 100 million years ago, the ocean covered this area. It is hand-mined by a centuries-old method of “pump and pillar” mining which has been used for over 400 years to extract salt from deep within the mine. The salt is pure with no additives or pollutants.

Himalayan crystal salt has not been exposed to the modern-day pollution of the 20th century.

Himalayan salt is sodium chloride, the same chemical compound that makes up table salt. The only difference between the two is the colour. Salt mined from underground deposits is whiter than sea or Himalayan salt due to impurities mixed in with it during its formation.

Himalayan salt is rich in minerals, especially magnesium and calcium. Some of these include iron, potassium, selenium, copper and zinc. Although the quantities are small, they are absorbed readily into the body through the salt crystals.

Reduces high blood pressure:

Magnesium relaxes the blood vessels, and potassium helps to remove excess water from the body.

Minimize muscle aches:

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant, reduces cramping and eases sports injuries.

Safe for kidney function:

Himalayan salt has less sodium than regular table salt and is easily absorbed into the body without additional chemicals or processing.

Reduces oedema or swelling:

Himalayan salt helps remove excess water from the body, reducing oedema. Calcium also supports the cardiovascular system and eases hypertension.

Helps to reduce acid reflux:

Aids digestion and lessens heartburn associated with acid reflux by raising hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach and aiding digestion.

Protects against osteoporosis:

Calcium and magnesium work together to increase bone density and protect against osteoporosis.

Anti-inflammatory properties:

Selenium reduces inflammation, which is a primary cause of various health ailments. It also strengthens the immune system and protects against cancer.

Improves heart health:

Copper plays a vital role in blood production and red blood cell formation. Magnesium helps regulate irregular heartbeats, which also reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Reduces headaches:

Himalayan salt also helps reduce headaches because it can help with dehydration. A headache is caused by a lack of water and not enough electrolytes.

It would be wise to drink some plain water mixed with Himalayan salt, which will help hydrate the body and provide the bare minimum of minerals needed for a headache to subside.

Iron regulates oxygen flow to the brain, helping prevent migraines and other headaches.

Relieves sinus problems:

Copper helps relieve congestion associated with the common cold, flu and allergies. It also reduces ear infections and may help to prevent them in children.

Cleanses the body of toxins:

The same properties that make it suitable for cooking make Himalayan salt an effective detoxifying agent. It can be added to water and taken internally to remove toxins from the digestive system.

Promotes healthy weight loss:

Himalayan salt is low in sodium but high in trace minerals that help digestion and regulate appetite, preventing over-eating.

Improves energy levels:

Zinc regulates hormone levels and boosts the immune system, enabling the body to release excess energy in a productive manner. Iron enhances oxygen flow to the body, stimulating physical and mental energy.

Fights disease:

Himalayan salt contains many important trace minerals that fight illness and prevent various diseases. These include selenium, which inhibits tumour growth, and copper, which is effective against viral infections.

Improves sleeping patterns:

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant that helps calm the central nervous system, so it’s easier to fall asleep at night and stay asleep.

Improves hair health:

Himalayan salt is rich in minerals that help to cleanse and strengthen the hair. It can be added to shampoo or used as a conditioning treatment for dry, damaged or chemically treated hair. Improves nail health: Himalayan salt contains essential minerals such as iron and calcium needed for healthy nails. It also promotes healthy nail growth and prevents hangnails.

Natural exfoliant for skin:

Himalayan salt has a soft texture that effectively sloughs off dead skin cells, which helps reduce the appearance of blemishes on the skin without causing irritation or redness. It can also be used as a body scrub before showering to improve circulation and promote healthy cell growth.

Helps to balance oil production on the skin:

Himalayan salt balances oil production, which contributes to acne problems. It also reduces redness associated with rosacea or sensitive skin issues.

Adds flavour to cooking:

Himalayan salt can be used as a healthy alternative to table salt in cooking. It also adds flavour to other dishes without adding excessive amounts of fat or sodium.

Enhances flavours in cocktails:

Adding Himalayan salt directly to drinks helps balance the acidity and enhances certain flavours, such as strawberries and mojitos.

Uses for cleaning purposes:

Himalayan salt can safely be used to scrub pots and pans without risking damage to the enamel. It is also an effective ingredient for various household cleaners, including window cleaners.

Beneficial for foot soak:

Himalayan salt maintains the balance of minerals in the body, which helps to relax muscles and relieve fatigue. It also effectively draws out toxins through the pores of the feet, which can help alleviate a variety of health issues.
