What is dead sea salt?
Dead Sea salt is a mineral salt deposit that comes from the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth and is located in Israel and Palestine. The high concentration of minerals in the water makes it impossible for any living thing to survive, hence the name.
The Dead Sea contains 33% salts, making it one of the richest sources of minerals in the world! Your skin is healthier when you are younger, but our bodies produce less collagen with age, so our skin becomes ‘older.’
The minerals in dead sea salt are both anti-ageing & anti-inflammatory, which means it is very beneficial for skincare treatments. Due to its low molecular weight, Dead Sea salt can easily penetrate the skin.
Is Dead Sea Salt better than Regular salt?
Regular salt is made up mainly of Sodium Chloride. In contrast, salt from the dead sea consists primarily of Magnesium Chloride along with smaller amounts of calcium chloride, potassium chloride, bromide, Sulphur, and some other trace minerals.
You may have heard that Sodium Chloride is bad for your heart; it predisposes you to fluid retention and high blood pressure.
Magnesium is pretty marvellous for your health; it reduces stress/tension, stimulates metabolism, regulates insulin secretion & blood sugar levels, relaxes muscles, and calms nerves. It also protects against diabetes, osteoporosis, and constipation (and thus aids digestion) and helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function.
Potassium is good for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, can protect against heart disease and stroke, and protect against the development of kidney stones.
Calcium is good for strong bones; it also helps your muscles contract and your heartbeat. It can help reduce high blood pressure and may protect against colon cancer. Most of us don’t take in enough calcium either, so this is an easy way to get it.
Bromide regulates the function of the nervous system and helps reduce seizures in epileptics. This makes it an important mineral for people with epilepsy. The anti-inflammatory properties of Dead Sea salt make it a good choice for skincare treatments.
Sulfur has powerful decongestant properties. It also contains strong healing, antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial capacities.
What Makes the Dead Sea Salt So Special?
Pure Dead Sea salt can be described as mineral-rich because it is very high in minerals. The concentration of salts and the different minerals found in Dead Sea Salt are unique to this salt/place. This means that there is no other place on Earth where you can find the same type, quality, or concentration of these unique compounds.
And that’s why…
Dead Sea Salt naturally moisturizes your skin without blocking pores as some lotions do; it keeps the right amount of moisture & replenishes moisture loss; it cleanses deeply without irritating or drying your skin (making it perfect for acne sufferers); the fragrance-free aspect makes it an ideal choice for sensitive individuals; it works well for people with psoriasis and eczema; and, it is simple to use.
You don’t have to go on a spa retreat or spend tons of money to get the benefits of Dead Sea Salt… you can do it at home.
Dead Sea Salt Usage?
There are many ways you can use dead sea salt, but here are a few of my favorite ideas:
1) Add it to your bath for a relaxing treat – make sure the water is only lukewarm because if it’s too hot or cold, you will lose some of its benefits. You should also add about half a cup to a full cup, depending on how big your tub is and how much water you’re adding. Make sure to soak for at least 20 minutes which is the optimal time frame for magnesium absorption.
2) Mix with equal parts water & apple cider vinegar (ACV) and rub all over your face, body, or soles of your feet before going to bed – this will kill any bacteria on your skin, hydrate it and make your body produce collagen to give you a nice glow.
3) Add about 1/4 cup of sea salt to an 8oz spray bottle of water which you can use instead of expensive “natural” toners that aren’t really that natural at all. Spray some on after cleansing your face before using moisturizer – this will cleanse & tone while getting rid of any excess dirt or makeup still stuck around the pores.
How To Use Dead Sea Salt For Acne?
Mix one teaspoon of organic raw honey with half a cup of dead sea salt and two tablespoons of oat flour for best results!
Benefits: Anti-bacterial & anti-inflammatory properties stop acne before it starts; moisturizes the skin without clogging pores; nourishes the skin leaving it healthy and glowing; rich in minerals that tone the skin and reduce redness/inflammation.
Before starting any home remedy treatments, make sure to consult with your doctor or dermatologist because some people have very sensitive skin and may not get the results they are looking for.
How long does Dead Sea salt last?
Thanks to its rich concentration of minerals, Dead Sea salt has a virtually indefinite shelf life when stored and kept free of pollutants.
If you plan on keeping it for more than three months, make sure to keep it in an airtight container like a glass jar with a tight lid (not plastic or metal) and store it in a dark, cool place. This will preserve its nutrients & make it last as long as possible.
Is it still safe to consume sea salt if it has changed color?
Yes, after prolonged storage, sea salt may change color somewhat, but it will still be safe to consume if it has been stored properly.
Where can I buy Dead Sea salt?
You can find dead sea salt at most health food stores or online retailers such as www.bathsalt.co.uk
